EDP Sciences joins the UN SDG Publishers Compact
- Details
We are proud to report that EDP Sciences has joined the SDG Publishers Compact. Since it was launched in 2020 in collaboration with the International Publishers Association, the SDG Publishers Compact has helped to focus the minds and work of publishers on the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Signatories aspire to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the SDGs during the Decade of Action (2020-2030), publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop, and inspire action in that direction.” (SDG Publishers Compact)
EDP Sciences joins a number of other members from France including the Syndicat national de l’édition (SNE - French Publishers Association) and the Fédération Nationale de la Presse d’information Spécialisée (FNPS). All signatories commit to ten points, including “Actively promoting and acquiring content that advocates for themes represented by the SDGs, such as equality, sustainability, justice and safeguarding and strengthening the environment.” EDP Sciences is pleased to offer a strong portfolio of books, journals and conference proceedings in these areas and reported on our work during International Open Access Week 2022, the theme of which was “Open for Climate Justice” (“Climate action” is the thirteenth SDG).
As a longstanding and staunch advocate of open access and open science, we believe that equitable open access models that are free to both readers and authors, such as Diamond Open Access and Subscribe to Open (S2O), can help move science publishing towards universal open access. Our advocacy is in line with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science which will certainly play a key role in helping to achieve the SDGs. The goals include “Affordable and clean energy”, “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”, “Life below water”, “Life on land” and other areas familiar to us and all STEM publishers.

Good quality, rigorous science is of the utmost importance and may prove to be a decisive factor in the achievement of the SDGs.”
