As part of EDP Sciences' ongoing commitment to furthering open science, this news update is the second in our "Road to Open" series, highlighting the sustained support for open access in mathematics journals through Subscribe to Open (S2O). The series offers a monthly showcase of advancements at both the journal and publisher level, focusing on successful implementations of open publishing models like S2O. This news piece celebrates the collaborative efforts of the library community, publishers, and funding bodies in ensuring the continued dissemination of high-quality mathematics research without the imposition of article processing charges. EDP Sciences and the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) are pleased to announce the success of the Subscribe to Open (S2O) initiative for their mathematics journals for another year. This collaborative effort, driven by the support of the library community, ensures the continued open access publication of six mathematics journals* in 2024.

Building on the success of previous years, we have once again met our subscription targets for the mathematics journal portfolio, allowing for the ongoing dissemination of high-quality research in open access without the imposition of article processing charges (APCs). This achievement underscores the commitment of both publishers and subscribing institutions to equitable and affordable open access publishing solutions.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the library community for their unwavering support of the S2O model, which has enabled us to sustain open access to vital mathematics research for the 5th year," remarked Anne Ruimy, Publishing Director at EDP Sciences.

The success of the S2O model, which has been endorsed by cOAlition S, is due to its collaborative approach, and its potential for achieving fair and sustainable open access. In addition to library subscriptions, the transition of the mathematics journals to open access is supported by funds from the Fonds national pour la science ouverte (FNSO), by the CNRS, signatory of the Diamond OA action plan, and other institutions. In 2024, we acknowledge exceptional financial support from CNRS Mathématiques (formerly Institut National des Sciences Mathématiques et de leurs Interactions, INSMI) and the CERMICS Lab, École des Ponts ParisTech. This growing coalition underscores the widespread recognition of the efficacy of the S2O model in fostering equitable access to scholarly research.

Amandine Véber, Director of Publications at SMAI, expressed pride in the partnership's contribution to advancing open access in mathematics: "We are committed to promoting equitable open science and look forward to our ongoing collaboration with EDP Sciences. Implementing the S2O model at a time when it was little known was a challenge that the SMAI is proud to have met with the support of the mathematics community."

Transparency remains a cornerstone of the S2O model, with EDP Sciences reaffirming its commitment to providing stakeholders with comprehensive financial and operational data. Plans to update the Transparency Report with 2023 data are underway, aligning with the principles of open science advocacy.

* The six mathematics journals participating in the S2O program for 2024 include ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations; ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis; ESAIM: Probability and Statistics; Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena; RAIRO – Operations Research; and RAIRO – Theoretical Informatics and Applications.

About Subscribe to Open

Subscribe to Open (S2O) is a transformative model aimed at transitioning subscription journals to open access. Initiated by Annual Reviews and endorsed by cOAlition S, S2O has garnered support from publishers within the S2O Community of Practice. This innovative model has quickly become an accepted approach for achieving fair and sustainable open access and builds on collaborative initiatives such as SCOAP3 and Knowledge Unlatched. For the EDP Sciences mathematics titles, all articles are published open access, free of charge under a CC-BY 4.0 license. APCs do not apply and authors retain the copyright to their work.
