As we slowly start to resume our pre-pandemic routines, we are heartened that the efforts of scientists to advance science for the betterment of society are more widely recognised and applauded than ever before. Reviewers, those oft-unsung heroes of publishing, play a vital role in keeping science ‘honest’. Peer Review Week therefore reminds us to pause for a moment, to thank our reviewers and to reflect on their contribution to understanding and tackling the challenges we face. Without doubt, “good peer review, whatever shape or form it might take, is critical to scholarly communications.”

We are pleased to announce that the next session in our Science Publishing Masterclasses series has been scheduled for 12-13 October 2021 in partnership, once again, with the Lumen Learning Center of the Université Paris-Saclay. Unlike recent sessions which were delivered online, this workshop will take place in person at the Institut de Mathématique d’Orsay.

We are pleased to present our new Archives feature “Modern commentaries – throwing new light on the past” realised in partnership with SciencePod.

Doctor Caton was Secretary General, then President, of the National Trade Union of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Surgeons for over 20 years.

EDP Sciences is committed to supporting and respecting the rights and identities of all authors in accordance with the principles informing the Committee on Publication Ethics’ (COPE) working group. EDP Sciences has therefore introduced an author name change policy offering two routes to changing an author name on published papers in order to support anonymity for authors with a need for privacy.
